Here at Quarter we love creativity, individuality and of course, Bristol! Nestled away at the top of Park Street, set slightly back from the hustle and bustle of the Triangle sits a hidden hive of creativity!
Studio 31 is a serviced studio space home to 13 studios and their creative inhabitants. Current tenants range from illustrators to building consultants, composers to film and music production companies, a music magazine, business consultants, music teachers and animators! Bristol prides itself on being an independent and innovative city and there’s a wealth of that here!
We asked a few of our tenants to spill the beans on what they do and what they enjoy about Bristol and Studio 31.
Evan Dawson
Executive Director of Live Music Now and Composer
1. Can you give us a quick summary of who you are and what you do?
I have two lives…. I run a charity called Live Music Now, which was founded by Yehudi Menuhin, and trains professional musicians to work in settings such as hospitals, care homes, special schools and communities, all around the UK. We have around 350 musicians on the scheme, and deliver over 3,000 sessions each year. The benefits of live music to people in such settings (particularly older people with dementia, or children with autism) are really incredible. We lead lots of research, and I am championing this work at a national level, giving presentations at the Royal Society of Medicine and the House of Lords….. And, I am also a musician myself. I write music for film and television (such as the theme for BBC2’s Only Connect), and am always interested in new creative projects.
2. What do you enjoy most about working in Studio 31?
I like the central location, with a view out over the city, and a friendly buzz of other creative people all around.
3. What project are you currently working on?
I’m working on a project that will bring together musicians, refugees and older people across Bristol; writing some music for a wildlife documentary about South America; and a project that will bring live music into care homes across Gloucester, Wales and the North East of England.
4. Where is your favourite place to go in Bristol?
St Georges, Colston Hall, Pinkmans bakery and Ashton Court.

We're now working hard on a 30 minute program showcasing the scope of this work that will be shown on Eurosport in the run up to the 2016 Olympics, highlighting the IJF's work in the favelas of Rio as well as many other countries around the world.
4. Where is your favourite place to go in Bristol?
It has to be the Harbourside for a beer on a sunny Friday after work, though we've needed umbrellas since May....
