Rachael graduated from the University of Bristol and joined Quarter on our Graduate Hotel and Events Management Scheme in 2005.
Quick progression led Rachael to the Manager position at the Washington Guesthouse. This was followed by management positions at the Clifton Hotel, the Berkeley Square Hotel and Square Club.
Rachael took over the General Manager of the Hotels Division of Quarter in 2010. She has since taken a Director position within Quarter.

After completing his degree in politics and international relations at the University of Reading, Jamie’s early career was certainly varied. He joined Quarter in 1994 as a casual barman at Racks Bar & Kitchen. Following a year out in Australia, Jamie returned to Racks to take up a new role as manager. In 2006 he went on to take over management of No.4 as well as Racks and in 2009 he took over the Globe and the Square as well. Jamie has also been at the heart of the festival team since 2009, running all F&B operations, stewards, publicity and the site as a whole. Jamie’s role as restaurants and events general manager involves motivating the team to meet and exceed financial and KPI targets whilst trying to identify the next trend in the market.

Natasha came to Quarter on our graduate scheme straight after completing her English degree at Oxford University in the summer of 2012. She swiftly became assistant manager at the Clifton Hotel before moving to head office to manage the sales and marketing department. She soon took on the extra responsibility of managing Clifton Short Lets before spending a brief period as manager of the Berkeley Square Hotel. She soon moved back over to head office to begin her current role as Head of Operational Development where she oversees the development of our managers and plays a crucial part in the running of our festival, HowTheLightGetsIn.

Julia started with us on the graduate scheme in September 2013 after graduating with a physical geography degree from the University of Durham. Since then she has enjoyed a rapid progression to her current role as Quarter Private Events Manager. Her journey kicked off with a front of house role at the Berkeley Square Hotel, and she later moved on to tackle the busy Christmas and New Year period at the Square Kitchen. Her next challenge was to take on a brief reception role at the Washington Guesthouse before being quickly snapped up for the position of Private Events Manager position at Racks – just 4 months after starting with the company! Most recently she has taken the step up to become Group Events Manager, overseeing Events not just at Racks but across the company. This is a varied role encompassing coordinating events, marketing and publicity accross the group.
“What I like most is the people at Quarter – it’s a great team, very social, and I’m working under excellent senior management. It’s great to have support from such experienced people. I also love the variety of the job – I’m dealing with everything from wedding receptions to 21st birthday parties, often in the space of one week.
This was my first job out of university and working with Quarter has really helped me develop my skill set in a professional context. I feel like very different person now.”
Colin has been a crucial part of Racks Bar & Kitchen's success over the 33+ years he has been at it's helm as Manager!
Colin was previously a chef so knows how to run Racks from both a FOH and BOH point of view. He has an excellent training ethic that he uses well within his teams - he has brought many of his assistant managers up from the more junior roles they started in.

Racks would not be Racks without Colin!
Dan’s formative years were spent studying Sport and Exercise Science and Leisure Management at the University of Gloucestershire. He spent time working as a Production Runner for ESPN and SKY sports before kicking off his career with Quarter back in 2007 as a waiter with Racks Bar & Kitchen. He was soon promoted to Assistant Manager at Racks and stayed in this role for four years before moving over to his current position as Operations Manager at the Square. Dan’s role involves the daily operation of the Square which includes organising rotas, cash handling, team management, marketing, financial control, meetings, customer service and staff training.

Jack graduated from Bristol University in 2015 with a degree in History, moving straight on to join the Quarter graduate scheme in October of the same year. Jack’s first placement took him straight into the Square Club and the ensuing busy Christmas period! The scheme then took Jack through placements with the Washington Guesthouse, the Clifton Hotel, Head Office, the Rodney Hotel and Racks Bar & Kitchen, before progressing to the role of Assistant Manager at the Clifton Hotel. Jackwas swiftly promoted to the role of Clifton Hotel Manager and in February 2018 moved into his current role of Clifton Hotels' Manager with a specific focus on revenue for the hotels division.
“What I like most about working for Quarter is the people. Everyone is lovely and there is a real sense of community. The graduate scheme definitely helps to facilitate this. The graduate scheme is very varied and you get to meet people from across the whole company. You get a sense of how all the cogs fit together to make everything work. The nature of hospitality is that you never know what the next day may hold but the graduate scheme and the customer service experience you acquire equips you with the skills to deal with any surprises that may come your way.”
“There is also a lot of emphasis put on development and training which is great in a company that has so many young people starting their careers. I really appreciate that, despite having only graduated recently, I have been afforded the opportunity to prove myself in a real position of responsibility and agency. During my time with Quarter I have developed enormously. The main areas I have developed in are people management, customer service, personal time management, having to make difficult day to day decisions and generally learning about how a hospitality business is run. Laura graduated from the University of Bristol in 2013 with a degree in philosophy and psychology. After spending a year doing charity work in Bristol she joined Quarter on our graduate scheme in October 2014. The graduate scheme allowed Laura to work in a wide range of Quarter venues, from the Rodney Hotel and the Berkeley Square Hotel to No4 Clifton Village and Head Office. After progressing to become Assistant Manager at the Washington Guesthouse and then at the Clifton Hotel, Laura soon progressed to be Manager of the Berkeley Square Hotel. Having moved into a Projects role in head office in early 2017, Laura was promoted to her current role of Projects and Systems Development Manager in July 2017. In this role, Laura works to aid the company's progression into different markets and reviews current systems with a view to improvement!

After completing his Economics degree with the University of Bristol, Tim remained in this beautiful city to join our graduate scheme in August 2008. He began his career with us at the Washington, first working at reception then swiftly being promoted to assistant manager. The next step for Tim was to move up to his current position of Revenue Manager in 2010. This key role involves handling pricing strategies, working with online travel agents, Reporting revenue results and plenty of forward planning, problem solving and system development to maximise results.

There's plenty of opportunity to make your mark and see the results of your hard work, whilst having fun with a superb team along the way. I've grown much confidence in my ideas and instincts. It's rewarding to be able to pass that onto to newer members of the team.”
Joanna studied at the University of Edinburgh. After completing her degree in biological sciences, she went on to spend seven years as a chef. She ended this career on a high, working as sous chef for a country house hotel in the Cotswolds. Looking for a change of career, she came to Quarter as a receptionist at the Clifton Hotel in 2006. Her decade-long career with Quarter has seen her progress through a variety of managerial roles at the Clifton Hotel and the Washington Guesthouse.
From here she came to her current role as Head of Quality and Value. This involves looking after all HR for the group, developing and executing training courses for the benefit of the group and working closely with suppliers to build and maintain good relationships.

I am proud of our training ethic and how we allow people to take on responsibility to ensure that our teams feel motivated and invested in how the company performs. We also have a very good bunch of people here - ambitious, intelligent and hard -working, but at the same time approachable and supportive - there is a real team feeling at Quarter.
When I started here I had just been a chef for the last 7 years. This company has taught me how to work in a front of house environment, how to manage my own time and prioritise effectively and build good relationships with guests and suppliers. I have also learnt the benefits of good management - building a team, investing in them with good training and then feeling the benefit of them in the years to come. I've learnt how you can have fun at work but still be productive. My breadth of knowledge has really helped my confidence improve over my time here.”
After completing an art foundation course at the University of the West of England, Cameron went on to study graphic design at Southampton Solent University. After a few years spent working with a company specializing in luxury travel packages for Formula 1 races, Cameron joined Quarter in September 2015 as Racks Group Design and Marketing Manger, playing a key role in the re-brand of Quarter. Splitting his time between No.4 Clifton Village, Racks and the Square, Cameron heads up a team who look after the marketing and design for the group. His role involves everything from social media to email campaigns, blogging, brochure design and website updates.

Clive started working at Quarter in 2015 looking after the newly refurbished wooden floors. Keen to progress in the company, he was quickly promoted to Floors Manager. From here he started to get involved in general maintanance and property work, which led to him becoming a property development co-ordinator. In 2017, Clive progressed to Property Development Operations Manager and then on to Property Development Manager.

Sam is a proud born and bred Bristolian. He graduated in 2015 from the University of Liverpool with a BSc in Physics and went on to achieve a Merit in his MSc in Power and Technology of Nuclear Reactors from the University of Birmingham. Sam, a lifelong Bristol Rovers fan, returned to his home city and began to work at The Berkeley Square Hotel on reception, doing so for 6 months. He then moved to the Reservations and Revenue Department, working there for another 6 months before being promoted to Website Manager and Revenue Supervisor.

Verity joined the company in 2015 after graduating from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Philosophy, Religion and Ethics. She started on the graduate scheme and soon progressed to become Assistant Manager at the Berkeley Square Hotel. After almost a year in the role, Verity decided to return to the University of Birmingham to complete a Masters in International Law, Ethics and Politics. She came back to Quarter as Business Development Executive, but soon returned to the guest-facing side of the business as Quarter Short Lets Manager.
"I really enjoyed the challenges of managing the front of house team in The Berkeley, but joining the team at Quarter Short Lets was a new challenge for me to take on. It has been a big step taking on the department, but with a growing team and an expanding scope, the challenges of the job are what make it enjoyable and I'm looking forward to seeing how the company develops further."
Kyle joined the Square in October 2014 and immediately his passion for food and The Square shone through. In 2015 he ran a pop up kitchen at the company’s festival, How The Light Gets in, and will be returning in 2018 to do it again.
"The reason I joined The Square was because I has heard good things about the restaurant and the standard of the food and I wanted to challenge myself. I have grown as a chef and I believe I have added great value to the business and a bit of passion into the food and kitchen team."
Monica studied Fashion Design in her native Colombia before embarking on a Masters in Fashion Business Management in the London College of Fashion. Prior to starting with Quarter Monica ran her own bikini brand back in Columbia (which is still running to this day), before starting with Racks in 2008 as a Breakfast Waitress. During her first five years with Racks she worked her way up to the position of Breakfast Manager before taking on the new challenge of marketing coordinator, before moving up to be an Assistant Manager for Racks. For the last few years she has been working as General Manager at No4 Clifton Village. Her role involves managing the kitchen and front of house teams and ensuring the smooth running of the business.
“I love the importance that Quarter gives to each employee as a person, constantly trying to develop each person’s skills, ideas and projects. Getting to try amazing desserts and stunning dishes, wines and spirits as part of the training is a plus! I also love being part of the HowTheLightGetsIn festival. Turning an empty field into a festival feels amazing!”

Sophie studied Drama and Screen Studies at the University of Manchester, graduating in 2015. After working as a Deputy Theatre Manager at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Sophie joined the Quarter graduate scheme in May 2015. Sophie had an immersive start with Quarter, with her first placement being at our annual festival, How the Light Gets in. She has since spent time working in the Washington Guesthouse before making a permanent move to the Square in August 2016 as Marketing and Membership Assistant Manager, responsible for planning the Square’s members events alongside taking charge of the venue's social media channels.
In January 2017 Sophie was promoted to Private Events Manager for the Square before being promoted again to Events Manager at the Square in June 2018. As Events Manager, Sophie is responsible for all events - from weddings to BBQs and Christmas parties. A typical day for Sophie involves meeting with clients, responding to all new enquiries and planning and running confirmed events. She also liaises with all event suppliers, briefs the Square team on upcoming events and organises our wedding fairs.

Amy came to Quarter straight from her fine art degree at Nottingham Trent University. She began her career with us in 2006 as a receptionist at the Berkeley Square Hotel, and after progressing to be head receptionist, she soon became assistant manager. After a year in this role she moved to her current hotel manager at the Rodney Hotel.
Key responsibilities in Amy’s role are managing the team – both front of house and back of house, and ensuring the success of the Rodney by hitting KPI and revenue targets.
“I have always loved all the people that work for this group, across the hotels and the restaurants. There is a real feeling of community and comradery within each unit as well, which makes coming to work a pleasure. From a Managers point of view, it is great how involved I can be in company decision making not only for my Hotel but also across the group.
I have spent the last 9 years in this company and went from being someone that was unsure of what path to take to being manager of my own hotel. I have learnt how to manage a team and feel my customer service skills develop with every new guest I encounter. I am confident in my own opinions and what decisions will best suit my hotel and my team.

Poppy joined the graduate scheme at Quarter in August 2017 with a rotation at the Berkeley Square Hotel. She then moved on to The Square where she worked alongside the events and restaurants teams and was mostly involved in preparing for the busy Christmas season. In November, Poppy was promoted to Assistant Manager of The Washington Hotel, then in February she moved to The Rodney to take over maternity cover in the role of Hotel Manager. After impressing in this temporary role, Poppy was promoted to the manager of the Berkeley Square Hotel!

Josh has worked at The Square since February 2013, starting as a member of front of house waiting staff before becoming restaurant manager in early 2015.
Good food and drink has always been a fascination of Josh's, and he considers food and fine dining to be a cause for celebration. A keen cook himself, Josh enjoys working with such talented and imaginative chefs at The Square in developing new menus and introducing guests to some unique flavour combinations. Josh has been involved in the development of our seasonal menus, which focus on sourcing the best in-season local ingredients and treating them with care and respect.
"The people at The Square and throughout Quarter have always made my job what it is, and during my time here I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with many dedicated and independently minded individuals. There is an atmosphere of comradery at The Square that I haven't found anywhere else.After five years in the company, I am still learning more about food and the industry, and enjoy the fact that no one day will be the same as the last. Your job is only as good as the people you work with."
Nick started with us in October 2017 after 8 years as a chef in several increasingly challenging roles, he is now our Head Chef at the Number 4 Restaurant. After studying Sports Sciences at Southampton University Nick made a complete career change and served his apprenticeship as a chef at the prestigious Bistro Restaurant in Devizes. Over the last few years Nick has worked in senior chef roles at Marlborough College and most recently Clifton College. Since joining Number 4 Nick has had to tackle the busy Christmas and New Year period as well as a exciting January launching the new a la carte menu. Nick’s latest challenge is to design and implement a new and changing menus that will achieve critical acclaim and move us towards recognition through various restaurant industry awards.

I particularly enjoy the team that I am part of and the fact that we all are all motivated to achieve success. My role is very challenging and constantly stretches me but there is always friendly help at hand when things get tough.”
Kessie has only been with the company since June 2017 and came straight into her role. She has a degree in textiles from (what was known as) Norwich School of Art & Design and did have previous experience of buying and design in the fashion industry.
Kessie's role at Quarter draws on this experience and so far she's been involved in projects for our garden short let flat at 64 St Pauls and Clifton refurbishments. Her day to day role involves finding ways to help the unit managers with improving their guests' experience and sourcing items which practically and aesthetically fit the needs of the business and the guests.

Lizzie studied Theology at Exeter University before coming straight to Quarter through our Graduate Scheme in 2016.
During the Graduate Scheme, Lizzie moved through our hotel receptions and venues before being promoted to the role of Caffe Clifton Manager. Lizzie impressed in this role and was promoted to her current role of Operations Manager at the Clifton Hotel!
Lizzie's current role involves managing the day-to-day operations of the hotel to make sure that everything runs smoothly and all guests enjoys their stay.

Dorotea graduated with a degree in Linguistic Mediation, studying English and Chinese. She worked as a teacher for 5 years before joining Quarter in March 2016 as a Hotel Receptionist. She swiftly progressed to the role of Head Receptionist and, before long, was promoted to Assistant Manager at the Clifton Hotel. Dorotea excelled in her position as Assistant Manager and has since been promoted further to Operations Manager at the Rodney Hotel!

Laura joined Quarter after working as a Lettings Manager for 8 years previously working for BT. Laura is now our Senior Account Executive, managing our 360 properties. Her previous experience and expertise in Customer Service and the lettings industry has really helped to grow this expanding division within Quarter.

After graduating from Liverpool John Moore's University in 2015 with a degree in Psychology, Georgia worked in sports retail as well as supervising official merchandising stores such as the Irish Open, Wentworth and the British Masters. She then joined Quarter and started at The Rodney Hotel as a receptionist before moving on to The Berkeley Square Hotel. After a few months at The Berkeley Square Hotel and Berkeley Suites, she moved on to Head Office as Business Development Executive within our wider Sales and Marketing team.

Miguel studied Robotics in his native Columbia before going on to work as a robotics lab assistant. His Quarter journey began in the spring 2014 when he joined the Property Development team as a maintenance team member. He soon progressed to the role of Property Development Coordinator and his current role of Property Development Assistant Manager. Miguel is vital in ensuring that the company projects go ahead as planned and are completed to a high standard.

Owned by the Hotels' Director, Rachael Gifford, Monty is a well loved and appreciated member of our head office team (provided we occasionally tickle his tummy and play games with him in our garden that is!).
Monty has supported Quarter on many occasions - often travelling with our Quarter sports teams to give Quarter the edge!
Getting a quote out of Monty about what he most loves about Quarter was tricky...but I can confirm that he loves the cat in the garden!
